An Attorney Can Help After A Car Accident Injury

Hi, my name is Kirsten Krueger and two years ago, I was in a car accident. I was stopped at a stop sign when the driver behind me slammed into my car. Due to my injuries, I had to spend a few days in the hospital and I was unable to work for two months. My medical care was expensive and without being able to work, I couldn't pay my bills. The car accident was stressful enough and then I had to worry about how I would pay my bills. After speaking with a car accident lawyer, it wasn't long before I was compensated for my medical bills and lost wages from work. I'm writing this blog to help others who have been a car accident and haven't received any compensation. As you read my posts, you'll learn how an attorney can help you if you're in a vehicle accident.

4 Things to Expect When First Meeting Your Car Accident Lawyer

by Sara Williamson

So, you have finally decided that you need to hire a car accident lawyer after your car crash. Still, you may be a little anxious about your first meeting with the lawyer and wondering what to expect.

Luckily, most auto accident attorneys offer a free initial consultation, where you get to meet them and talk about your case. After that, you can decide whether to go ahead and hire them or look for another lawyer. Read on for more information about what to expect during the first meeting.

Discuss Your Case

Even if there was an initial consultation over the telephone or online, your attorney might not have all the details needed until the two of you have had a sit-down. Some questions they may ask you include how the accident happened, the medical treatments you have received, and any conversations you have had with your insurer or the other driver's insurer.

Don't hold back any critical information concerning the accident, even if you think it's embarrassing or capable of hurting your case. This first meeting is covered by attorney-client privilege, so all information shared is safe. Besides, withholding essential information may hurt your case, as your lawyer will not be adequately prepared to counter all arguments raised against you.

Legal Advice

Once your car accident attorney has understood all the circumstances surrounding your accident, they'll offer you insights on what to expect. For example, they'll tell you the various types of benefits you may be eligible for, the process to follow when filing claims, the documents needed, and how long the case is likely to take.

They'll also advise you on the role you're to play in the case. You may be required to attend regular doctor appointments, sign some documents, and remain truthful throughout the process.

Discuss Attorney Fees

The attorney will inform you how much they charge for their services. Most car accident lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they'll only receive payment after winning your case. The fee, usually a percentage of the award, is deducted from the proceeds, so you will not pay anything from your wallet.

If you're comfortable with their fees and would like to retain them, you should sign a written retainer agreement. There are no additional or unexpected fees when working with an auto accident lawyer.

Establishing Communication

This is only the first meeting. It's expected you'll be in constant communication with your lawyer until the case is complete. Hence, they'll inform you how you can reach them when you have questions or need clarifications. They'll also tell you which channels they're going to use to inform you about case progress.
